'Smart stadium' to feature 5G, other advanced tech during 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

Beijing moves a step closer to a successful 2022 Winter Olympics. China Unicom, along with Beijing State-owned Asset Management Company signed a strategic partnership on Thursday.

The two sides announced they will work together on completing the three major venues for the Olympic Games. Smart venue construction and venue communication network construction will commence on the National Speed Skating Stadium, National Aquatics Center and National Stadium.

China Unicom said it will take 5G technology as the leading force to safeguard the Olympic Games. Experts said the next step will see the two sides strengthen cooperation in 5G technology-based smart finances, smart pensions, smart medical care, and product business.

"Through strong cooperation with China Unicom, the two sides will jointly explore the solution of winter Olympic venues, with the help of advanced technologies such as 5G, edge computing, artificial intelligence and others," said Zhi Jun, president of Beijing State-owned Asset Management Co. "We help create a model and experience center for the Intelligent Winter Olympics and create more Olympic legacies benefiting more people."

"In promoting the construction of intelligent venues for the Winter Olympic Games, China Unicom will join hands with Beijing State-owned Asset Management Co. to give full play to their respective resource advantages, promote the organic combination of technology research and development and the transformation of achievements, speed up the application of cutting-edge technology under the premise of safety, stability, and reliability," said Mai Yanzhou, vice president of China Unicom.

The strategic cooperation between the two sides will help improve the digital, informatization and intelligence level of Beijing Winter Olympic venues. Form smart venue benchmarking projects to industrial chain cooperation demonstration, the scientific and technological strength of China will be revealed to the world while jointly promoting the Olympic events.
